Thread: 260rem powders & barrel length

Looking for advice on powders & bbl length for 260rem. Recently acquired a 260 bbl which I plan to fit to my Model7 when the current bbl (708) is shot out. This will be a bush gun but want to retain enough speed to stretch out to 500yd or so when needed. I’m planning on running 140 AMAX, 143 ELDX & 140gn Speer HC.
Bbl length? Thinking 18 or 20. Not going any shorter but can I get away with 18in and still get north of 2700fps at muzzle with 140gn pills ?
And what powders would suit best for this in 260?
Have RL17 & 16 on hand, plus Superformance & most ADI powders. Don’t want to use RL26 as I’m rationing that for my big bangers.
Other powders worth considering?

Superformance goes well in 260. @25-08imp uses it.
I use w760 so I guess 2209 be good.

Easy speed with 120s if you're happy with it being a 400m gun.

RL17 will be your friend. You maybe down on charge weight due the the short mag & usable OAL but should still get reasonable fps.

Superperformance with the 140s will be the go even with 18" barrel.

for 2209 ADI says 42 gr book max for 2670fps so that wont do.
Im running 41.4 gr of 2209, so 2600 if im lucky with the 18" barrel.

Superformance, 129LRAB , coming out of my 20" tube at 2850 , I know it's not your chosen bullet weight , but some real world data for you .

I've been using 123 sst over 2208 out of a 16" 260. 2760 fps and kills to 540m.

That said, it is currently transitioning to a 24" 6.5 SAUM. Mo is mo betta.

Yip Hodgdon superproformance and RL26 are my go to powders in the .260 and Creedmoor you can get just over 2800fps from a 18" barrel if using Laupa brass. I use Norma in my son's and can only get 2750 before hitting pressure.
Both powders are within 1 grn of each other for same speed.

Will follow with interest as i putchased a 260 last year and always looking for load options. My current load details are 143gr eldx projectiles. 44.8gr Superformance powder. COL 2.88” 2750fps from a standard sako carbonlight. Barrel is 20 inches.

Been thinking of trying reloader 26 or 23 in it.

Thanks all for info & experience. Sounds like 18in bbl length & SPF powder will provide a good solution

Superperformance and 2209 go great with 140s. 120s work really well with 2208. Ran all 2/3 at 18" and my m7 @ 20".

41.5 grain of Reloader16 with 140 bullets worked well for my 19inch barrel. stacking holes at 200.

In a 260 ? What velocity?

I'm getting 2700 with 41gr of 2209 from a 18" tikka with 143gr ELD-X. This is 0.5gr less than the ADI book max.

So getting what you want shouldn't be an issue
