    .3030 slugs

Hi guys, been having trouble finding 150gr fn slugs for my .3030, it`s all plastic tipped stuff there`s days. They ok for my .308 but in the .3030 I like a lead flat nosed bullet, any one know who might have then around akl, Cheers, Homebrew.357.

have you considered trying cast bullets they can be shot at the the same velocity as the jacketed in a 30/30 at half the cost

Hi, Yep getting into that, have got a lee c309- 160-r mould ,shooting lead down range is cheaper than jacketed , but I like the jacket stuff for hunting as it smacks them down. Just got some 3031 powder to try, thinking start at 28.5 -to- 30grs with the 160gr gc lead bullets, my first lot I stuffed up, pushing through the sizing and lube die and seating the gas check all at once, I squashed the nose so it hit the rifling on loading and pushed the bullet in to the case. I`ll try G /C seating pushing from the base and sizing and then lubing. I like to use one powder for all my reloading so the 3031 is good for my .308, 3030, and 45-70. Will go and have look a Wills Outfitters to see what they have got. Homebrew.357.

you want the 170grn flatpoint mold for hunting - the 160grn is a round nose and will not perform on animals

Mold Dc C309-170-f - Lee Precision

the .30/30 is a natural with cast . . run them at 16000fps to limit leading and you will deck anything you shoot at

my favourites are the 170grn Lyman FP and the 197grn RCBS FP in my 30/30 or .308 . . at subsonic or 1600fps they are great killers

Are those paper patch bullets, they dont appear to have any grease grooves.

Hi guys, yes the 45-70`s are from my home made paper patch mould, 420grs and .444" dia, pp and sized to .458/9". And yer, I think for the 3030, (mines a Marlin lever with 16" barrel) the 170gr fn would be better for hunting, are you using them on reds ?, I could re machine the nose shape on my mould or just buy a new one, anyway still trying to get them to group at 100m and casting with a lead / linotype mix , about 80/20 , so will keep banging away, Cheers, Homebrew.357.

You might need to add a little tin to that mix the linotype is high in antimony which is much harder than lead and wont amalgamate without tin which can lead to leading. I use the lee 180 rn in my 3030 over 10 grains of blue dot and no filler for 1470 fps, this has dropped lots of goats, pigs, and fallow but never a red.
I hollow pointed some on the drill press, they still went through unless bone was hit and the outie holes seemed only slightly bigger so ive stopped doing it.
Just a comment ,i made some up for a friend with a marlin, and got them back averaged 5 inch groups at 100 compared to in the 94 where they shoot 2 in at 100 with open sights. Someone has said that the micro groove barrels are fussy about cast bullets but dont know if thats true or not

go for a bullet diamater of at least 310-311 with micro groove for good accuracy

straight wheel weights without a GasCheck is good up to 1600fps, accuracy has been a little better with a GC and a cleaner barrel between shots but not so much to make a practical difference for hunting.

penetration & accuracy is about the same with 170s - 200grn bullets with my Marlin 336 1-10 15inch twist barrel . . . . the longer heavier bullet just seems better, forget i mentioned it.

Goats, Fallow, Reds will fallover with a good solid hit from a cast Flat Point at reasonable ranges . . . a reasonable range is up to to the shooters skill and gear.

1.5MOA is achievable without to much trouble . . the blunt bullets do drift in the wind so keep that in mind if you want push the range

    good luck . . R

Yer guys, I`m on to that, have a bit of pure tin, (I was an Electroplater) to add to my pot and bullets are sized to .310/11", powder load wise I was looking at a m v of 1700/1900 fps. Hopefully will come right when I get my bullet making right. The micro barrel seems ok with the lead bullets, it`s just that I had loaded 20 rounds with bad bullets, all over the place and loaded some more, then found the problem, so shot them down range to empty the cases. Giving the 3030 some jacketed stuff to check it at the range as I`m going on my annual five day bush camp hunting trip. Also trying the Sharps with pp bullets and 3031 powder, I know it`s not black, but I`m ac/dc. Cheers, Hombrew.357.

Hi, On a Google search Wills fishing and firearms is at 332 Huapai, but looks like he's moved as the building is up for lease, so will see if I can track him down, no real problem, I've got 12 3030 jacketed fn 150gr cartridges, that's enough for a heap of deer. Or I could my old .303 or my .308, or the 45-70, decisions , . Homebrew.357.

The Sierra 170's are a good bullet, and the 150 grain Hornady RN is another.
