Which is the best 7.62x39 Hunting ammo

    Hiya guys,

I have no experience with this round and have just acquired a single shot Baikal in 7.62x39 as a cut down 100-150m open sighted bush rifle.

My question to you more knowledgeable folks who may have used this hunting is:

Which is the best hunting ammo that you have come across?

Look forward to hearing your thoughts,

    Regards,

    JK

Just thought I would add a comment of

"I know bush shots are generally less than 25-50m and it would be paradise to see 150m where I hunt"! lol

I had good results with Barnaul in my old one and Hornady does a SST that seemed to work well too. Sellior and Bellot is another inexpensive brand that worked well. As it is a single shot, I also had some handloads done that were 150gr 303 projectiles with a hotter powder load that got slightly higher velocities than the std load. The action can handle the jandal as it is also chambered in 308, 30/06 and 270 but it is the brass that becomes the limiting factor...

Even saw one of these 7.62x39s rechamberd into 303 British....Very tempted to try that one .....

Thanks for that, I will have a look at the European stuff as I was told it doesnt like steel cased ammo.

I use Highland 123gr PSP brass cased, (or PPU as I think it is currently branded). Drops deer and goats cleanly. I highly recommend it. Gives you good brass for future reloading as well.
I have a box of the Hornady steel cased SST's but my AR7.62x39 wont hit the primer hard enough for detonation so have been unable to test it on game.

    Buy the Highland!
If I didn't have 3,000 rounds of it stashed I would be all over it.

    I consider it an 'investment'.

It was so cheap at the time [compared to mill surp and other hunting grade ammo] that I couldn't go past it. At the time, .223 pricing had gone through the roof, and my theory is, if I had to, I could lob it at rabbits
If only we had all had the foresight and money to have purchased a container load of .223 before the price rocketed we could have each self funded a year off work to go hunting
$/kg, $100,000 invested in .223 ammo would have yielded significantly higher returns than gold ......... provided you can keep it away from your magazines ......

wont touch that stuff again after finding a piece of case folded over with a hunk about 2mm square extra that was inside neck area..we discovered it after firing...hate to think what pressue was like on that round.
