    loads + powder 300wsm

recently added 300wsm to the long range arsenal and want to work up some hand loads. Reading up the various Reloading Manuals I see powders from 4350 or 2209 thru to RL22 or 2217. Have started with 2209, IMR4350 and 2213SC but wonder if double base powders like RL19 or 22 might give better results ? Any suggestions of loads and powders would be most welcome, I'm not chasing the last few fps but more interested in tight groups at decent velocity. Running a 231/2 in bbl. cheers

what projectiles are you using or looking at using, i reckon a 190grain berger is pretty well suited to the wsm if you have a long action.

Im running reloader 17 through mine with 168amax and getting ok velocity and very good accuracy, this rifle comes with me on most hunts.

In my 270wsm I was using 2213sc which preformed well with 140s. But perhaps a touch slow for some people.
Then I changed to 150 grain projectiles. I tried 2217 and it gave great accuracy and good speed. Then went to 2225 and it improved velocity to 2950fps and shot 20mm groups at 100m.
So that maybe worth a shot for you.

cheers, In other rifles I've found the slower powders better results. In the 300wsm I want to run pills in 160 - 180 gn range - 165 Speer, 165 SST, 165 Partitions (not for long range) & then 178 AMAX or 180 Bergers or AB's. Really interested in any experience comparing double base powders RL17, 19 or 22 vs ADI or IMR etc (single base). With the short action wsm cartridge I was wondering if the double base gives better numbers ?

cant comment as i have only used rl17, but by all means it does seem to give more velocity than standard powders

My 270WSM uses 71gr of Retumbo to push a 150gr Berger at 3160fps. Not the same as a 300WSM, but Retumbo(or ADI 2225) should do the trick.

I use 65.5 gr of R 19 with 190 gr VLD, thing shoots like a laser will do .5 MOA all day and even better when I do my part well. Had plenty of 7mm Groups when conditions were good. Doing 2950 FPS, could get more out of it but that's plenty and was the most accurate. longest Deer so far is 875y on a 80 Kilo hind and still left a fist sized exit hole, so have a look at the VLD's , early signs is looking good with them.

For the 180gr Load that use to run I was using 68.2gr of R 19 with 180gr SGK and that shot very well aswell, a mate still uses that load as his main Hunting load and has taken a shit Load of deer with right out to 997y.

These are in 26 inch bbl

So yeah R 19 is a bloody good option for the 300 mate. hard part is getting Alliant powder now tho. Good luck

Yeah it's warm, but after speaking to Hardy he's getting 210's over 3000 with R17, take from that what you will.

The 180gr Load is doing 3120 out of mates 26 inch tube. Again warm but not no means hot.

What did your mate do to his Tikka to load long range projectiles. Have heard you need to fit a new bolt stop and magazine due to the lack of room in the standard mag to fit long range projectiles.
Save our Tahr. They belong in the southern alps.

    I started out with 65gn 2209 pushing 168 Amax & 165 Interbond's max velocity was around 2950fps.
Then tried Superformance using same projectiles and got a lot more speed still using book max 72gn, chrony'd at 3287fps.
Took Rifle to Tect park range and shot .5 inch groups at 100m, Tikka T3.
Definitely worth giving Superformance a go, good for mid range weight projectiles, not much load data around for 208's etc?

Nothing think he is only running 168 or 178 amax cant remember which, another mate is running a 270 wsm and changed the mag to a rem mag one and moved the bolt stop himself
