Dart about to take another Hammering

Dart river is about to face another poison drop in September which will potentially wipe out an already decimated whitetail herd.

I am no anti 1080 nut. I am neither for or against it but this upcoming drop in September appears to me to be a deliberate attempt by DOC to wipe out the mainland whitetail herd.
There will be no deer repellent used.

Doc are fully aware the mainland whitetail herd is in peril.
People have been working hard to prevent anymore damage along with Doc being fully informed.

I believe the drop is being done to protect Mohua which are in very low numbers where there has been no poison dropped before.
Also something to do with the beech seeding.

Info we have so far is the drop is costing $200 000
    to poison 20, 000 hectares.
To use deer repellent it will double that cost.

The whole of the Landsborough, Clarke and Haast river valleys are also being done soon as well.

@There estimated low cost of $57 per hectare id say that $200.00 is way off the mark.

Apparently they will be doing Kaharangi again this year, not sure now much, they want to do more than last time..... so over a quarter of a million hectares....but won't know how much money they have to spend until after the budget....

NZ Herald article talking over $20 million to be spent.
20,000 ha @ $50 equals at least $1million for that "small" drop alone.

Ministry for Environment (Minister Hon Nick Smith) current mfe VTA poisons review classifies Deer as "PESTS" because 1080 gel is designed to target deer, and this gel is of less concentrate than the more common pellets at 0.15%WW.

Sounds like Goldenbay going to get it big time. Rumours of the COBB being hit again.
Prob will show just what 1080 does to bird life if the Cobb gets done again. Was up there in april, the effects of one drop hasnt really come into effect yet, apart from it was clear there wasnt much fallow around and saw one kea in two soild days hunting.
But there was still plenty of birds, more than any other area ive hunted in the past few years that have had more than one drop. I put money on it if a second drop and that area will become slowly , but surly another dead area of bird life. Its ok thou, the supporters will just say the 1080 was too late, and it was the rats that wiped them out and next year we drop it in bigger numbers

I had a conversation with doc today about planned drops for Canterbury. Real shame. Biggest in the area to date.
