This is outdated thinking really. It works alright in a planned management regime. We continue to use it because we don't have vulnerable native mammals like other countries do.
1080 has virtually eliminated wallaby from some of the blocks that we previously culled hundreds off.

Not saying it hasn't been the case, but I'm not aware of claims that 1080 is being used to eradicate possums. Certainly claimed to be a control tool, though.... not unlike a lawnmower.

Remember the statement from the ex deputy mayor of Auckland when the Hunua Ranges were getting their drop number 6 or 7. "possums will be gone forever with this drop"

Don't be the first person to trust what a politician says, or a used rifle salesman for that matter

Identify your target beyond all doubt because you never miss (right?) and I'll be missed.

Its a silly statement and they deserve to be the ex mayor.

Results in the Hunua ranges are pretty impressive though, mid 1990s there were only 25 kokako, 24 of those 25 were males, because the females get predated while on the nest. Last census 229 pairs of adult breeding birds.

Didn't believe his remark, it was a calming statement for the many who were fed up with 1080 being dumped in their water catchment area at too regular intervals.

what he says about backing off when population gets low is EGGZACHARY why we now have a wallaby problem..the wallaby board guys got laid off and the population has been growing and expanding ever since....
I'm totally on-board with what Makros said, the point I was alluding to was that 1080 seems to be the goto for control/eradication and doesn't seem to be working and does a HUGE amount of collateral damage. The "establishment" needs to smarten up and find other ways to control/eradicate that dont also destroy the fauna we're trying to protect by eradicating the invasive species, like I said, I'm no expert but it seems clear that the current approach patently isn't working......it's kinda like pouring fresh oil into your engine when the sump plug has been removed....looks like something worthwhile is being done but in the background a god awful mess is being made

Do you think it worked in the Hunua ranges ?

    Your suggestion ?

When its used for wallaby control (the topic here), whats the huge amount of collateral damage? Evidence, and can you quantify it? All Ive seen is dead wallaby, and of course a by-kill of deer in the absence of repellent.

the "lollie bags with oddfellows in them" stapled to trees for possums are highly effective on wallabies....shockingly so in some places.
    interesting its not used more.

That analogy doesn't really work though does it? With a lawnmower, you know, sure as egs is eggs that you'll be back next week cutting the fekking grass again

mate you completely missed the point..... Maxx is agreeing...the lawnmower and 1080 drop both only do the job to knock it down now and will need to be done again, and again and again...we havent found a roundup method for possums yet.
