I used to hunt Goats on a farm on the peninsular in the 1980s ... the old man was friends with the owners.

I also used hunt pigs and deer up round the Wharerata Ranges and in around the Gisborne Town Supply Water Dam at Mangapoike with a local.

From memory we used to find more Gardens than we did deer or pigs.

Best thing to do is contact Doc in Napier or Gisborne and ask them about Hunting Acess or as suggested go door knocking.

I also know there's been a bit of poaching going on around the Tiniroto area so I'd definitely ask first before heading into this area.

Te Urewera is a good place to hunt ...... Not far from Mahia either.

    Cheers
    Pete

There is a very interesting herd of red deer on the peninsular. Some very good heads with unique throw back tops. Access though is almost non existent now a days.

Tobys grandfather was telling me this weekend that the origins of the mahia herd was German? Can you confirm Tahr?

Be certain to get permission anywhere round there.
I've heard the cops have been giving poachers some attention as the forestry/landowners have become tired of poachers' antics

If you didn't get lynched by the locals first for poaching their poaching blocks.

Of all things, I know of a very good Rusa head that was shot around Mahia. Nearly got thrown in the scrub as an oddball 6 point red.

Some very big pigs out there too.

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds
