Cool No 1080 for nelson lakes this year!

Good news for us locals, Nelson lakes isnt going to be 1080 this year to to low rat numbers and low beech seeding they saying. Cant believe DOC has done a u turn...maybe its more to do with the low kea numbers after last time and trying to save the few remaining birds . Anyway, its only good news

So if Nelson lakes national park beech is not going to seed heavily this year how is it that Kahurangi beech is going to? seeing as they are only separated by a few km in parts.

Maybe it is just the biggest area (dollars to apply) less visited(less opposition)

Or maybe I am too cynical.

It's that. Seedfall and rodent tracking varies quite a lot even with "small" geographical displacement like that...

the decisions are being made the same as always, based on monitoring data.

So do the whole park rather than "small" pockets ?

Call your local senior biodiversity ranger and have a chat to them about it, I'm sure they'll be very accomodating and answer all your questions. I don't have their data available

last time I rang my local Doc office I got transferred at least 4 times between people who had no idea about what I was asking, dont remember what I was asking but it was some kind of simple outdoor related thing...they all switched off when it was outside the office.

    Yeah.
Last time I spoke to a biodiversity officer they could barely admit that Moa were vegetarian, and to think that they could have fed on a similar diet to deer was as good as blasphemy.

Know of a small local area DOC, where the possum monitoring was close to zero. 10 km away in another area was quite high. Guess what, both areas were done, they said it couldn't be left as they were working nearby.

It's well known that rat populations multiply massively after 1080 operations. perhaps they are gonna go into rat farming. And of course, stoat farming will follow on from that.
