that fit in to the chamber of a shot gun but seriouslry why would you want to buy one
Here's why...if you get one that takes 38 special then you can take it along with your cut down single barrel shotty on your fly in trips...all you need is a handful of brass and a packet of primers and a de-primer tool...cut wads from your mates sleeping mat...no powder needed...great for shooting cans through the tent flap or out the hut door on those rainy days when you don't want to get out of the fart sack...of course I have never done this and have never been on a trip where it happened.

A shotgun has a smooth bore - no rifling ( interesting point raised earlier though about a smooth bore , black powder musket , I wonder where that sits in the legality issues , I would think - illegal )
It doesn't matter what stock, sights, trigger ,type of action , number of projectiles thrown in a single discharge .
What you saw those blokes carrying was a " Shotgun ".
If you put a rifled barrel on your shotgun it becomes a rifle ( the words " rifled barrel " kind of give it away ) .
The use of a break action shotgun always worries me in a pig hunting type situation . Either the gun is carried unloaded ( slow to bring into action ) or loaded with the safety on . The thought of a prolonged chase ,crashing through the scrub with a loaded shotgun , and relying on the safety catch always makes me jumpy . I stay well away from those people .

A shotgun is a shotgun no matter wheather it has a rifled barrel or a smooth bore .The main reason being that you can still chamber a "shot" cartridge and that is its primary purpose

    I respectfully say "Bollocks"

shotgun: definition of shotgun in Oxford dictionary (British & World English)

Note the word smooth bore .
I can buy rat shot for my .22 but that doesn't make it a shotgun .

So by your Oxford description, much of the American civil war, French revolutionary war and most pirate battles were fought with shotguns?

If its a "shotgun" with a rifled barrel it primary purpose is not firing shot cartridges.

I think its all down to the guns configuration in terms of barrel type, ammunition in possesion and the the discretion of the authority.

They were fought with smoothbore Muskets ( the forerunner to rifles , one projectile at a time )
The forerunner to shotguns was the Blunderbuss , which was designed to shoot multiple projectiles at a time .
