Would prefer .308 or .223 but i'll consider anything. Don't care what it is I dont want to spend much more than $450ish

Hunting is relaxing just like Yoga except I get to kill something.

There should be a few Husqvarna 6.5x55 on trade me for around that budget and they are usually pretty reliable. Always the tried and true 303 sporterised....May even have one of those (N04 Mk 1 ) for around the $250 mark that would leave a few $$$ for a scope....

I know of a very tidy Midlands 243 available for about that money. I did up the woodwork and reblued action for a farmer friend. May also come with a Vector 3-9x. Its definitely an entry level centrefire setup but have checked it over and it appears sound.

Thanks for the replies guys! Sorry Bob thats a bit too steep as I need to keep money aside for a 10/22 and glass for both rifles. For the mauser and winchester can they be mounted with optics easily?

I saw a 6.5 on TM but that rounds a bit too much for the ranges id be shooting at (-300 yards) plus its a bit pricey to shoot without a reloading set up.

Could be keen on the 243 if it already has glass.

    Cheers guys!

I have a browning A-bolt in 243, got it from a friend on a trade, I never fire it and sounds it has shot more or less 300 rounds. Great condition with. A very, almost invisible rusty pitting in the outside of the barrel where the suppressor sit, I can't even take a good photo of it. Rifle has a Leupold 3-9x40 (OLD SCHOOL) 1/2MOA adjustments per click over a set of Leupold base and rings, has a old school suppressor, a gunworks, asking $1000 plus shipping... I can organise photos a bit later...

Not quite sure which ne you are considering. The 6.5x55 is very similay in ballistics to the 308, 7mm08, 243 and usually is just under the 308 / 7mm08 in speed and bullet weight (but not byy much) They are a very pleasant calibre to shoot and are ideal for the ranges you describe. They are Masuer 96 actions and are extremely reliable.

Ones like this on tarde me ..

    husquvarna 6.5x55 | Trade Me
$1R 6.5 x 55 mm Carl Gustav Swedish Mauser! | Trade Me Good buying but I suspect it wont get anywhere near his buy now....but could be worth lifting your budget as it apready has glass....

    sold
    6.5X55 mauser | Trade Me
Carl Gustaf 6.5x55 | Trade Me

@timattalon I say .223 or .308 as its just what Im familar with and they are cheap to shoot.

Ive never fired a 6.5 either but i know its meant to be a good round (why some special forces use it) but they are quite expensive to shoot.

Whatever rifle i get id want to use at the range a lot on top of being my bush gun, It'll be my only centerfire rifle since i got rid of my SKS to get a new shotty

    Cheers

The Midlands 243 does come with a basic Vector 3-9x scope. Very much an entry level combo - $450 is right pricing. If I remember correctly timber and blueing very good, action sound, trigger good, barrel good.

Don't know rifle's accuracy. Gadgetman gave owner one of his 243 loads and that didn't push it's buttons. Would need the normal experimentation with a few makes of ammo or reloads, and off the bench rather than out in a paddock. If interested send me a pm - I'll give you farmer's number and you have a chat with him.

the winchester has bases on it, i have had it a few years and used it for a homekill gun. If you are interested you can shoot it in the back paddock, im in carterton. After $400.00 if that suits you.
