    7mm

Working along the same guidelines as a 6.5 Gap 4s

    24" barrel
9 pounds or under with scope and sling and mag
    short action
    low recoil
keep at 58,000 PSI or less
at or under 6 mils to 1000
1000 ft lbs energy left at 1000 Yards
    George Gardner, G.A. Precision

What would be a 7mm version?

    Tikka action or short action
    Prob won't be low recoil.

    What's your thoughts

    7mm Rem SAUM

Mine pushes 162 amax at 3k from a 22" barrel. Just over 7 lbs scoped. Recoil is stiff, def need a brake or decent suppressor to take the edge off it.

So you are thinking 300 saum brass with 35 degree shoulder?

I run a 7 saum wildcat 200 short at the shoulder in a model 7 I have a 24 inch tube and currently running Amax at 2830 over 51.5 of 2209 with CCI LR primer in formed 300 saum brass. I am on the first firing of the current lot of brass, I will move to 52.5 once fireformed. In rem brass I was getting 2930

    details here https://www.shootersforum.com/wildca...m-wildcat.html and https://www.shootersforum.com/wildca...questions.html

forming the brass is a chore but I have it down pat only need to do it once a year or so. Recoil is minimal, follow up shots are quick but I run a long older hardy can which really soaks up the noise+recoil, love this supressor the new ones have more bark. I have a carbon stock and fluted barrel and light scope so still a lightweight rig.

7mm Blaser Magnum is the perfect size for a Tikka action

Good Norma brass available and a great round slightly below 7mm Remington Magnum performance

    Thanks for the replies.
One of the main ideas is to run at low pressure like the gap, to get good barrel life. They seem to be getting 3-4000 rounds from a barrel. So I don't think the 7mm saum could push them fast enough at that low pressure.

I believe h1000 (AR2217) is a bit easier on barrels anyway. What's your intended application. Barrels aren't really that expensive.

Will be using 2217 as this seems to be the powder of choice to achieve this performance and pressure. Will be and all rounder hunting rifle with a fair amount of gong shooting. If I can achieve this performance and at least twice the barrel life, why wouldn't you

What about a T3 in 7-08 reamed to .284 Win? Tikka action will allow you to seat 162 ELD to over 3.1" OAL and still easily fit the mag.

As an aside I was amused to read that the 3500 rounds George Gardner got from his 6.5 SAUM 4S was achieved with only one set back and re-ream of the barrel.

Thanks for the replies. Don't seem to be getting the answer I'm after.
What case do you think will push the 162 eldm at about 3050-3100 ft/sec out of a 24" barrel using 2217 powder with 58000psi pressure or less?

You are asking a better question now.

You will need a case larger than a saum, wsm or Rem mag I'd say. As you will have to down load a larger case to get the velocity you want at lower pressure.

The Quickload software program will be your friend.

Probably asking in the wrong arena TBF. Ask a (reputable) gunsmith. Everyone here will only push what they know, which compared to a decent smith is going to be fuck all.
The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds
