what calibres are you specifically after and why do you want to buy a basically brand new rifle as opposed to a 2nd hand one?

https://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/hun...1408886138.htm - bloody good rifle and an ok scope

https://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/hun...1404875208.htm - best combo i have found for near your price. Solid scope and quality supp. From a shop so can buy with more confidence

https://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/hun...1409323961.htm - get the rifle cheap and buy some good rings and a scope.

The Savage Axis is really a price range down, sub-$800 and often as low as $600.

The Savage 'trophy hunter' are usually around $1k as a package deal with Weaver scope, and much better than the Axis. Would be my pick for best value I think.

270s are totally unfashionable but, as @Mooseman will confirm, they still perform bloody well.

Yeah it did mate. I spent a bit of the weekend going round the local sports shops here in Central, no body stocks a Creedmore let alone a Grendel. Ammo is going to be a pain in the arse and I was told that no one would be interested in a Trade in later on as it was to odd ball and would sit on their shelves for years. All of which is is a fair and good point.
Both shops felt a 223 was to light as some of the across gully shots down here are pretty big sometimes.

So the old fav's were talked about.

    308 / 7.08 / maybe 6.5 x 55 etc.

I want to drop a deer, maybe a Thar in the future, rattle some gongs and try some longer range stuff and maybe on very odd occasions vaporise a rabbit.

So now my thread ( should have used the old one ) has moved not only to what make of rifle but also calibre . I have a 1k for the rifle, then will get it suppressed, scoped etc.

I really can't make my mind up over 308 , 7.08 , seems like it's really just splitting hairs.

    Neither 308 or 7m08. Go 6.5 something!

I must admit that I'm tempted by one of these, but I should find a 223 with the bolt handle on the wrong side for TimeRider first. But that that Grendel does look a sexy little beast.

That will be when they bring it out in the non mini action I'd say.
