    Buyinig Scope in States

    Hi Guys

My wife is on a work trip to the States right now. If I got her to buy a scope (could get a VX6 for NZ$ 1300!) could she bring it back into the country ok? And for that matter take it out of the States ok? Anyone done this recently? Any pitfalls? Seems too good to be true. Even if she got hit with GST on arrival that would still be a really good price.

    cheers

Just make sure it is not an ITAR restricted item, then should be good to go from the USA...
And because its over NZ$700 limit, you may get stung gst...

Thanks for that mate. Just been reading the ITAR list. I reckon a Leupold 2-12 vx6 should be okay. Not made to military specs. Anyone out there who has actually brought a riflescope in in checked luggage or cabin luggage? How did it go?

    Yep
Have bought back scopes in checked luggage without any issues.

Just make sure it isn't on the ITAR list and declare it as optics not rifle parts.

    Cheers

shop in washington called Atlantic Guns. Got a website Atlanticguns.com seems pretty legit. They've got the simplest vx6 2-12 at 990 US. The ones with dialable turret, zero lock, illuminated reticle etc are more, around 1300-1500. I thought I might try phoning them tomorrow, see what they say.

I'm looking at Cabelas right now, they've got them as low as 1100 US. Maybe a new model is about to be announced...

SWFA has really cheap Leupold scopes.
Prices on VX6s have dropped recently in the States.

    gst @ $215.22 - always budget to pay. If you don't, that's a bonus.
Entry fees @ $49.24 - same deal as gst, budget for it.
Client code - not sure if needed.

As always - run thru "What's My Duty".

Good advice that cheers. Yeah still around 500 NZ in it. As long as my wife doesn't have any hassle out of it.

There was some talk on a U.S. hunting forum about a new model VX 6 to be announced. Some think it's a VX 6i.

Owned a VX 6 2-12 duplex illuminated a couple of years ago. Not a bad scope, a little on the heavy side. Compared to a mate's Zeiss Victory variable scope the Loopy wasn't in the same league optically. Then, it wasn't $3,500 either.

Am in the US now, off shopping today. It is best to carry optic's in your carry on, cos thats where you can look after them. Take it out of the box, and have the gunshop fit a set of second hand cheap worn rings on it, put a bit of tape or rubber tube on it to make it look used, take it outside and look through it at a target or deer or goose or whatever and it then becomes second hand. And dont carry any of the wrapping, or paperwork etc with you. Then you shouldnt have to pay any GST.
