What do you have to do to an AUG to make it A-cat? Isn't it sort of A anyway? Where do you get sub 10 round mags?

A-Cat would have a connector front and back, not just the front for the pistol grip?

GC have thumbhole A-cat stocks for them, has a bit going back from the grip as well as the trigger guard/forwards bit
As for 7 round mags, you'd probably need a hacksaw and an army mate??
Would like one but $4k is a bit rich

    Nope. Free-standing pistol grips:

"is (if any trigger guard is disregarded) structurally connected to the firearm at only one point"

Wondering why anyone would want a neutered example of what is otherwise a fantastic rifle?

I am NOT standing up for gun shitty but actually the Awful Ugly Gun IS quite expensive even in the good old US:

    Steyr AUG A3 M1 - Sporting Rifles - Firearms

Going on the typical rip off 2x US is about normal here.

I seem to remember being told that one cost the NZDF about $2,500 back about 2000. Lot of money for a lot of plastic.

There's a lot of engineering that goes into my making a high quality plastic. Just because an item's made of plastic, doesn't immediately relegate it into the "shit" bin. For what it's worth, my AUG Z cost $3500 2nd hand. I highly doubt that, should one actually come up, that it could be had much cheaper.

From what I've seen, they rarely come up. 've seen more SG-550s for sale than AUGs for example.

So @gimp in conclusion the black (or green) rifle brigade think i't unlikely to get one for much of a discount but we will keep our eyes open.

Personally recommend getting a version with a rail and fitting your own optic.
