In all honesty a 7mm08 tikka reamed to 284 launching 162s would be a pretty damn perfect all-rounder.

Very true, don't forget you can get Magnum performance if required by reaming the same rifle to 7mmsaum giving you 3000+ fps with the 162g Amaxs/ELD-x

What length barrel would you need to achieve that?

Magnum is only a label, and most people relate it to cases with belts on them and buckets of powder in them. In truth, the 7mm & 300 saum are really a 284 on steroids. Good, healthy steroids.

Maybe so but it says magnum on the case, don't see the words steroids or 284 on them

I was only being a smart arse anyway, you can be the winner

9 years on from the Original post -who is still using a 7mm08 as a dual purpose (short and long range) rifle ?

The 140 BT is seriously useful

Me. A7 with 18 " barrel. Projectile by preference 120 NBT but during this shortage using 140 SST. Has never let me down - dialling out to 500 Yards. Currently has a Burris Signature 3-15 HD. Previously a vx6 2-12. Its also my loaner rifle and has been used by several people to shoot their first deer. Never fails.
