This little project has been on the backburner for a few years.

The action is a rare factory single-shot L579 that came out of an early target rifle my deceased gunsmith built. Soon as I saw it, I knew it had better uses. Stock is a McMillan HBR I got cheap second-hand. It originally had a Barnard S action, again co-incidentally done by the same gunsmith. The stock was a glue-in and needed backfilling before re-inletting, my current gunsmith doing a -fantastic- job on this including fitting pillars. The rear screw is hidden under the custom trigger guard. Luckily the moulded-in stock colour with plenty of black virtually hides the repositioned bolt handle cutout. Barrel is a 24" Krieger with a DPT fitted. Scope a Swaro 5-25 Z5 with MOA elev knob. Lucked out on the scope mounting- the Extra Low Sako rings put the scope less than 1.5m above the barrel, and this plus the stock shape makes for a great cheek weld.

I wanted a walking varminter so went with this lighter setup and it's chambered in 6 BR. An absolute pleasure to shoot- almost no recoil. The BR is a seriously accurate chambering and walks all over a .223 for wind drift, despite using only about 3grs more powder. Fired two groups the other day while fitting the scope, both under 1/3". With some load development, I'm expecting something round 1/4 min accuracy

He's the gunsmith for NZ Hunter who prefers to stay behind the scenes.

For those who have never seen a 6 BR, here's a lineup for scale:

    .223, 6BR, 6x47L, 6.5x47L, 7-08

The 7/08 seated out longer than we do. Find to the top crimp hits the accuracy sweet spot.

Given there is an interaction between load and seating depth, what works for you may not work for me.

The rounds are loaded to max mag length, ie 2.83", and that's still well off the throat. Long as the load shoots and feeds properly, you're good to go.

Yeah. They would probably be gaining velocity again as they fell from the sky.

Nice one Shearer. A still evening like tonight in Hawkes bay with plenty of "up" in the scope maybe he could do it. I know his gunsmith builds a rifle that's accurate enough.

6BR holds many group records at 600yds but it suffers badly in the wind past there compared to bigger chamberings.
I could stick my ATAC-R on it and easily get to 1000 but wind's always gonna be the problem.

I'd be much better off past 600 with my 6x47L driving the 105s but they aren't as explosive as the 87 V-Maxs. The 105 Hybrids out of the 47 are about 7mins flatter to 800 than the 87s out of the BR and they drift over 3.5mins less in the wind. It'd only be greater at 1000.

It was very calm (if not warm) down in Central Hawkes Bay this afternoon but the number of targets was very low. We saw a total of seven rabbits where we would normally see 20-30. The RCD has really dealt to them. I got two of the three I shot at, the closest being 257yds. Was surprised I got them as the zero was guessed a bit.. The 87 V-Maxs sure do the biz- a "pest bird" was completely gutted at 220yds, not a lot left ..

Had time yesterday to test out the new to me 2506 that I purchased off @300_BLK . Gotta say I am pretty happy with it! These 3 shots were off a bag at 100m with hand loaded HPBT. Cheers mate!
