New barrel for Ruger American .308 rifle

    Hey all.

I'm after info on who would be the best person to talk to about having a I guess custom barrel made to suit my Ruger American . 308 rifle?
As a few may know they heat up fast. After about 3 shots or so they start spreading out.

So I thought instead of buying a new rifle that I would see about having a custom thicker/harder barrel made instead.

    All help is appreciated.

why do you need more than 3 shots.. if its a new rifle and it doesn't shoot take it back, try different ammo or load your own

Going spread out could be a stock / barrel conflict?

Any of the major gun smiths I guess.
I still owe baldbob a punch in the face.
He said "If i ever sell this punch me in the face, its the most accurate rifle I have ever owned" while talking about his custom Ruger.

He sold it and I remember stuff

Its going to cost you more than the rifle is worth rebarreling it, i would rather sell it and buy something better as a starting point.
But if you still want to rebarrel any of the reputable smiths can do it, the ruger american is not a pressed in barrel is it?

Sorry to jump in here guys... Is this spreading out normal on a 'cheaper' rifle after a few shots? Is it a only a cheaper rifle problem? I have a Marlin X7 and after about three shots it does he same, the first shots are on target though. Not a problem when hunting but I wasted a bit of ammo sighting in until I realised that it needed to have a rest.

its pretty common to see guys at the range blasting rounds with no rest between and then wonder why their gun is shooting shit ( we are talking like 10-15 rounds at a time)

Maybe? I would imagine the bedding may have a bit to do with it but over all I don't think the value of a rifle would factor into the equation much...?
My Finnlight does the same after the 5th in quick time but still does at about 1.5" groups.

As I understand it most sporting weight barrels will take a walk when hot. Take plenty of time between shots.

Mine strings vertically, slightly to the right when it heats up. groups open up to about 1.5"

Dont think its worth spending $800 odd on a rifle thats only 750 bucks to start with. Plus the narrow plastic barrel channel would restrict the profile of the new barrel, so modifying or more likely purchasing a new stock will be another added cost.

Is it a hunter or paper puncher?
