New rifle setup for a friend.

    Hiya.

My cousin has had his Model 7 308 since he was 12 years old (now 30) and killed countless deer with it. He's decided he's going to treat himself with a brand new setup.

Looking at a Sako 85 in 300WIN with a VX-6HD 3-18x44 and or DPT Suppressor and/or Terminator break.

He's looking at buying from Gun City but I'm sure there are some better options. Anyone recommend somewhere where he may get better service/deal? He's based in Auckland

    Cheers

Any Guncity "deal" will be normal retail anywhere else. Giles at Taihape sports is suppose to be really good for deals.

Reloaders have always been good to me. I have basically the same setup, 85 finnlight in 270wsm, VX6 and was running a DPT but in process of changing to a brake. Gregs (Terminator Products) brakes are good kit, should be a nice setup.

Long story but worth a read:

I was at the range yesterday and a guy was there sighting in his brand new Sako 85 Finnlight in 308 with a nice zeiss conquest hd5 2-10. He was getting frustrated as he wasnt getting it to group. He said this was day two of trying to get it to work for him, using about 4 boxes of ammo. When he walked off in frustration i looked at his set up. I instantly saw his issue. Gun city had mounted the weaver rings back to front, with the tapered bases facing the opposite way to the taped reciever top. This meant only the leading edge was holding the bases to the scope. This has caused the scope to slide forward under recoil, moving the rear mount off the rifle so it was hanging in mid air. The front mount had stayed put, with the scope moving inside the ring. This resulted in the black finish and metal being stripped off the new scope. Upon feeling it you could feel a ridge in the finish where the scope had been compressed due to over tightening. So this poor bugger had wasted hours, closer to $300 on ammo, and a new scope wrecked because the "experts" at Shit City couldnt even mount a scope. I really felt for this guy as his new pride and joy set up was fucked.
My suggestion is to go anywhere but Gun City, not only are they average at what they do, but they are normally more expensive than everywhere else.

The gun set up sounds awesome.

Keep the Model7, and add a CF from @stug & add a Timney trigger. Save yourself quite a bit of coin. If its had too many rounds down the pipe & accuracy is declining then get a Truflite bbl.

He's definitely keeping the Model7, wicked little rifle. I also suggested getting it kitted out with a @stug stock. In time I'm sure he will. He's after a canon this time round to mix things up a bit.

Looks like he's going to work with Serious Shooters.

Jesus wept, good luck to him.

As an aside, a mate has been waiting for some time for a '85 Sako 300WM, synthetic stainless.

Due in April, due in May, due in June.....that's Beretta NZ for ya.

If he's after a cannon (30 cal magnum) then I'd definitely check out the 300WSM's as well, and plenty of lower cost options than Sako 85. I have several older Sako's myself - damn fine rifles, but I dont think the 85 today gives enough "superior performance" to match the price tag. But each to their own.

I recon either you have the means and you treat your self with a sako carbonlite, or you buy a tikka, that you can slowly get tricked out.

Serious shooters or Bill out at H&F Botany. All the others struggle with customer services, experience & skill.

He got a ripper deal from Serious Shooters, sounds like they looked after him. Had a 300win available too in Sako 85 finnlite
