    That's the trouble with these fancy scopes with all the doodads on too many things to stuff up, Wouldn't happen with a good old steel fixed 4 power

    Very true. Many scopes disintegrated in the old days. And are now forgotten. Only the most durable 10% are still around and those are on trusty favourite guns not used much now.
