Quad bike brake cables can fail

Honda TRX 300 quad - had it since new in 94 - done 11,500kms - farm use and hunting

Had it backed down a hill with a tandem trailer full of scrub that I was tipping over a bank - bit silly but I was pulling the stuff out from behind the trailer
Took the bike down to the shed - on a slight slope so put the hand brake on - the cable just snapped at the hand brake lever
A bit lucky - I might have been another statistic for this week
Mechanic tells me they break regularly - for safety sake - might be worth giving it a hard squeeze now and again to stress test it

    Yep been there
When I was shepherding in the Wairarapa I lost a quad down a hill while opening a gate, luckily I managed to convince all my dogs to jump ship

The left hand lever which is also the hand brake lever on a Honda is actually only meant to be used as the hand brake lever not for braking as that's the right hand or left foot brake lever. When I broke my second one the mechanic told me that
It seems they sell heaps of those cables as they are intended to be hand brake only.
I was stunned but it must be right as I v broken left hand cables that have the hand brake lock on them . Ha ha only cos the brake pads on right lever were squealing there tits off.

Funny as. RTFI. Read the fuc in instructions. That was what I was told.

That cable lasted 20 years so I must be generally using the foot brake - has been on hills for last ten years
Option for repair - $70 odd for genuine or $20 odd for aftermarket - the genuine one should see me out
I had another big red on a property I sold a couple of years back - it was older than this one - ex my deceased hunting mate and ex dairy farm use - very tidy but no km history - dealer in Cambridge grabbed it for a client and gave me $3k
I will tell my wife to list it on here - when I am gone
