    What your truck needs.

Nothing worse than getting caught out with vehicle related trouble. What are the essentials that we should all carry in our trucks, utes or whatevers.

Torch that works and a spare battery.
Something to light a fire with.
Jumper leads and not those noodle ones.
Snatch strop or tow rope with assorted shackles.
    Knife.
Assorted spare rounds in the centre console. Driving back down from Double hill up the Rakaia and a mob of Chamois crossed the road in front of us. Of course all the rifles were empty. My brother grabbed a round from the ashtray and attempted to load a 30.06 into his 270 as they dashed back up the hill unbothered. So make sure they are the right ammo.
My uncle always carried a small folding pruning saw. Heaps of applications for that. My Grandfather always had an axe and a shovel in the back of the Landover as well as shingle screens. He was hard core though bless his soul.

    What else?

Anyone have recommendations on a place to pick up a decent tow strap with shackles? Cheaper the better, as long as they'll do the job. Might get used once every couple years.

My current vehicle for everything is my work van and what I seem to use most for general stuff is a roll of cloths, cable ties and steel fixing wire I have bent over the bar of the headrest.

@Bonecrusher mate harsh words grew up in Timaru so the AKL quip not really fair and no don't drink the stuff ever. My brother still lives down South and carries a scruffy old Swandry to put when fitting the chains not really required in AKL though. So keep a puffer jacket in the back incase the temp. drops below 20.

Warehouse had Orca 1kg dry powder at $20...Mitre 10 Mega had some at $18.99 (?) of their house brand. We used our extinguisher before christmas and still have a lounge (albeit with a few scorch marks) from a lithium 18650 that did a great impersonation of a sky rocket in the house. Get one for each vehicle and a couple for the house / garage....you never know.

A good quality, >20% stretch, 8,000kg 9m snatch strap are all around the $100 mark. There are cheap imports around but I would stay well clear [low stretch performance + lower than advertised breaking strain = injury or vehicle damage].
These guys are no dearer or cheaper than others, but do free freight.
