Montbell is winning this aspect so far
Don't have any other down bag to compare it to. My criteria was the versatility rather than the packed size so I went for the larger size bag and cheaper loft. Big and roomy was the goal.
You save a bit on not having a hood [which was the big seller for me - hate hods]. If you go for the 950 loft and size your bag to suit your smallest pack size you will save heaps.

looks good - interested in your view on that temperature rating for nz winter hunts? i don't exactly understand the bag rating scores in terms of personal comfort. mountain temps would regularly range lower than -2

Yeah I got this to try as my Domex is way to hot although I think it looks a better made bag and has more room but I melt in it, so dieing to try this one.

If you already have a jersey as a layer I assume you have other jackets / tops that you use.
i would substitute the jersey ( wool / heavy ) for a synthetic product such as a packable vest or jacket. Look to something with a pertex outer layer that offers some water reisitance ( not water proof ) and wind blocking ability. The inner material could be something like prima loft. These generally pack down to a bit larger than a tin of baked beans and weigh around 250 to 500 grams depending on quality and fill. Think mac pac or even bivouac out doors for suppliers.

You could go to down for this layer, but then you have to keep it dry at all costs just like you sleeping bag, and it also becomes a part of your "sleep system" thereby letting you go to lighter bags / quilts.
Personally I went to Enlightened Equipment too for a down quilt so in a hut situation you can use it opened out like a duvet or in a colder environment close it up like a bag. Mine is a 600 gram revelation. But I use the down / synthetic jacket as a booster when needed.

Sums up what I have, big jersey that takes up more room in pack than my jacket

Will be interesting to see how you find it. I'm picking you will be a bit chilly in a tent at 1000m+ in winter

Milk is not supposed to come from nuts man
The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds
