    dual use locator beacon question

Hi everyone, this is my first post on the forum.
I have just bought a 5m boat and want to get a locator beacon for safety. Im based in Invercargill and i plan to mainly blat round lake wakatipu, teanau etc. I have no intention of heading out to sea. I also am looking into heading into the hills a bit further as I get more experienced hunting. So… i wondered if guys have any suggestions for a locator beacon that is small enough to take in my pack yet the right type to get me and my family rescued if the boat goes south. Is there such a thing? hoping not to have to buy 2 specific ones.
    Suggestions please..

A little rescueme or similar would be the go. Just keep it on your person.

I bought a "Safety Alert" PLB. it's small enough to wear on my belt (inside a nifty canvas pouch ex Southern Adventure) and I'm really happy w it.

I'm not a boatie but it will accompany me when I take the canoe out on those same lakes.

There's an Ozzie guy on here who sells PLBs, and you'll appreciate the peace of mind (yours and family) when you own AND carry one.

buy one of the PLB's rather than a fully fledged EPIRB and attach it to your life jacket when you are boating (with clip and also lanyard) and round your neck when hunting.
Packs can be ripped off if the whoopsie is really bad

This is a good option. It can float unaided and has a great battery life. Contact @CooeeBay or SkippersMate Marine & Outdoor - Buy Online Supplies.

Just remember an EPIRB for boating is designed to float upright UNAIDED and will transmit for a min of 48 hours once activated, whereas a PLB must by Au/NZ standards have the ability to float only, but not upright, hence the need to hold it out of the water and has a min of 24 hours activation time.

Thanks for all the support in the above messages. I've been out walking the Milford Track a couple of weeks ago (with my KTi PLB in the trouser cargo pocket) - reason for message comment.

    regards
    Peter
