Check out the battery life per headlamp. I have a LED Lenser H14 and whilst I love the light output, I have learned it can quickly chop a set of batteries on high power.

Yes the appropriate battery is highly relevant too
I use H14. Never let me down. I like that it has a low power setting for reduced battery use. I have also spotlighted on private block and taken deer at 100m with it. Also carry a spare set of AA when I go out. Always carry a backup light source just in case.

+1 I also like how you lock them off so you don't accidentally flatten it, & it has a half brightness setting for around camp, like Tahr I carry a small lenser torch as a back up.

I have an 18650-powered H600 zebralight which is good but prefer my princetontech apex 4xAA for long trips as it has a great battery life, I carry a small 3aaa kathmandu cheapy as a spare in a small plastic jar to keep it waterproof. As others stated a spare is a must.

I have tried at least 3 types of 18650's including the panasonics and none of them have ever seem to maintain full power in torches as long as a 4aa torch, I agree with the OP that headtorches with remote battery packs eventually fail with wiring issues too. It's tough to find a headtorch that does it all...

I was a bit sceptical about the mount/tilt set up but it's very robust and simple

I have been very happy with my zebralights. I have two, a bright 18650 one for walking back to camp and a floody aa powered one for in the hut. When out hunting I take the hut one as well for a backup.

I am also after something like the Armytech/Night core/Maxtoch type thing (@1000 lumens, small, light) but want something that runs on AAs.
    Any suggestions there?

I have a mammut that you need to push the one button twice in quick succession before it goes nuts. Also has a battery indicator light. Haven't seem then here though.

Couldn't find the HD1 on Maxtoch's Product List via AliExpress, is it no longer available?

I use a nz made Gloworm setup, they come with all sorts of mounts for mountain bikes, motorbikes, helmets and headbands etc

Often find them on sale at your local mountainbike shops

Fully adjustable from 100 lumen to 1500 genuine lumens, and the battery packs have a " fuel gauge"

The smaller battery gives me 48hrs of light and the larger over 100hrs . It easily lights up the road ahead for motorbike riding back in the dark

Up around the full throttle settings your mates can turn their headlamps off

If you unscrew the battery cap a couple of times it can't turn on by itself...

approx $110 NZD delivered here https://www.massdrop.com/buy/armytek...50-v3-headlamp

Found this comparison. Warm looks more pleasant for walking/general use but white might be better if trying to shoot with it Different color temperatures based on Armytek Wizard
