    New tent needed

In the market for a new tent, big enough for me, pack rifle and dog. Have used a kathmandu one and not impressed, semi hijacked an old thread earlier this eveninng. Msr carbon reflex 1 came up, I like the look but dont like the idea of carbon poles (wear and tear) and if they do break cargon firbe and fabric wont mix well!

So what tents are u guys using?

Will be mainly bush and a little high country open tops hunting. Have been down the bivy bag and fly road and not a fan when stuck in it for a few days

Will also add that while I dont want to carry half a ton of tet around, I would prefer it to last and put up With a bit of wind

I note that my msr is the green outer one, not the new NX White outer ones, my experience with the new ones is that they are shit round

Dont waste your time chasing every last fps, it doesnt matter in the real world, it wont make a difference, all it will do is cause head aches and frustrations. And dont listen to silly old cunts

I've got one of these and I rate it for weight - 1kg with the footprint

Big Agnes Fly Creek 1 Ultralight

Select good ground, put it up carefully and don't stress it by rolling around too much and it should last

May be too light for some people?

Big Agnes 1 person tent | Trade Me

My North Ridge tarp with stretchies and rope weighs more than the tent

I think that the ideal setup for me would be this tent and a small light tarp to rig up as a cover for a cooking area at one end? Ultralight tarps can be down to 400g

I have the same but even older with the yellow fabric. Can't fault it so far and i have had it up in some reasonably poor weather. I got mine secondhand off Trademe.

I am yet to see any MSR stand up to any decent amount of wind, something to consider if you plan on doing some time on the tops. For lightweight plus stability in wind I would look at some of the tents from Terra Nova or Hilleberg, I have a Terra Nova Solar Competition and when its got all the guide ropes out is a pretty bombproof little unit, only weighs 1kg too, if you are planning on having the dog inside you would probably need to go to something thats a bit bigger though, have had my dog in mine but hes a Staffy so not a big dog, and it was a bit of a squeeze, have also slept with the Mrs in it, but thankfully we know each other reasonably well..

There may b the odd trip with the Mrs so will prob go for a smaller 2 person as long as there is enough vestible space for packs. The hubba hubba does seem to have problems in high wind and condensation on some reviews

I have a hubba hubba copy, got online from a shop in Auckland
1.8kg from memory, seems to hold up to wind etc
If your heading inland from chch you can put it up and have a look

I am after a new smaller tent too. Will probably get a Macpac Minaret a little bit heavy but strong enough to handle more wind. Macpac are having a sale on now too. Cheap conpaired to MSR
