You can let pheasant go, they need cover and food plants though. To keep them in the area you would need to get an automatic feeder, chap breeds them was telling me can get them for about $150. Not all the released hens will nest, and of course if there are stoats and wild cats they will prey on the youngsters so that will cut numbers down too, but if conditions reasonable for gamebirds some will survive and hopefully increase the population.

Predator control is the single best thing you can do for released birds. A paddock of kale or other brassica is great to release into, they eat the aphids and caterpillars off the plants. It is very rewarding rearing them from eggs to releasing.

Partridges are really cool. I see a few here in Hawkes Bay and they don't appear to go far from the same spot. Mind you, this is right next door to a game bird breeder so this could be way off normal.

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

You can buy the spiral spring feeder off ebay.co.uk for the same price as they are here basically...
