Hi guys Iv got a mate down here on a bit of a bucket list mish he's cought lots of fish all round the world but never cought a snapper in Nz he's wanting to catch 1 from the beech/rocks bit of a mish for him but time is of the essence he's just got back from the library reading up & isn't sure if it's a good time to head up he's looking at flying to Auckland hiring a camper but I though I mite be able to come up with a few options for him on here ...anyone got some info ?

Top of the Coromandel usually produces the goods about now.
Thanks for that Pengy ,any idea on timeframes earlier the better before winter gets here or can you catch snapper all year round up there ?
Any camping grounds handy to the fishing ?
he runs outa steam pretty quick but he good for around half a k he lasted that long few days ago on flat ground before I had to go get the truck :thumbsup:
Plenty of campgrounds up the top of the peninsular, and they will be empty this time of year.
May onwards always seemed to produce off the rocks for me.
Easy access to good surf casting around Otama and Opito, 20 mins North of Whitianga. Also a few easy rock spots around the area.
One small word of warning. If your mate is in a camper, the council Nazis up that way are hot on freedom camping

There are lots of places just off the road between Kawakawa Bay and Kaiaua (1 hour south of Auckland Airport) where you can cast a line from the beach and expect to catch snapper and the best time is now. Caught a 10lb snapper a couple of years ago. Caught and released this 8lb+/50cm snapper a couple weekends ago (already had a couple of 40cm+ fish in the bin).

Just seen this post @Boaraxa, this time last year I had a few great weekends of harbour fishing up at Houhora. Had a couple of evening fishes on the incoming where we caught 3-4 400 mm fish each.
There was a great episode of outdoors with Geoff a while back where he was with a Jeweller from Hibiscus Coast. This fella was catching the same size fish regularly in July, in shallow water north of Orewa around the reefs in some cases 1m of water. He looked for channels between reef and rocks. He had a hook, his bait and no sinker.
His secret was he used an old ice cream scoop on a stick, which he scooped out a couple of scoops of a brew of left over salmon and rice/ mashed patato and cast it out into these channels. Consistency looked like putty. He would give it 5 mins then cast out his bait which he had dipped in a container on his belt which had blended salmon that looked like pink snott.
He was catching decent fish at dead low tide!
theres no fish up north sorry haha
tell him to use heaps of berley 3 bags per trip if fishing off the rocks
fish early morning before sun up till around 9am and going on to dark ie 4pm onwards
harbours will quiet off for snapper now as the temp drops but good shore structure around 10m+ should hold them for a while
lots of berley.
find a good rocky area on a point and be patient
