Track walking times (Ureweras and Kawekas)

    Good morning,

Just wondering if someone could help point me in the right direction where i could look up how long it would take to walk certain tracks. Just having a look at google earth and there a couple of loops i've been wondering about. Are there some maps with times etc? I could work it out i suppose just thought maybe DOC has something.

    Cheers.

Some of the early track guides used to give times and distances, This was for the Urewera and and were for the Whakatane river and Waimana .river. I am sure that there was one for Lake Waikaremoana as well

Taupo trampers publish a lot of tramp details on the web. That's worth a look.

Apart from the Waikaremoana track, there's not been a lot of track maintenance done on the likes of the Waimana and Whakatane tracks for quite some while. So I'd be a bit cautious of "indicated times", someone with local knowledge would be a better bet. The last time we walked the Whakatane track, downstream, in the main it's pretty easy to follow, but between Hanamahihi and the Waikare junction, there's quite a bit that's "disappeared! Not that it matters much, if the river is ok just wander down the river bed, lovely walk in good weather! Magic piece of the country!

Wouldn't want to be trying to get out of the Whakatane at the moment---they have had the highest river level ever recorded there!!
I'd hate to be ploddin down the valley "on me orse" and have that lot arrive!! It's a huge catchment and add the Waimana to it and it's a massive amount of water! I bet the landscape has been altered a fair bit.

I'm thinking of a couple of grassy islands up a couple of creeks that I'm pretty sure won't be there any more! Might be some nice slips in a couple of years time...
