    Aviation enthusiast thread

^ USAF F-15 based out of Kadena AFB, Japan.

Awesome HD clip with an okay soundtrack. Provides a great demonstration of air combat manoeuvring, in-flight refuelling and you can also hear the in-flight comms. It also happens to feature my favourite US jet fighter aircraft, came off the drawing board in the late 60's, can break Mach 1 in a vertical climb, has never been shot down by an opposing aircraft, can fly on one wing... Not to mention can carry a shitload of ordnance!

It's simply a super capable machine - amazing that this (and other awesome aircraft of the same time period, viz SR-71) were designed using slide rules and pencils.

That's a dog and a cheeta on the same page Toby maybe a little unfair, but Chuck Yeager put a captured one into a full powered dive to see how it behaved. Later when talking to Russian pilots they didn't believe him as you couldn't do that and get them to pull up, they were amazed.
That Blackbird is one of my favourites built in a time of slide rulers and the Taitanium was from Russia the CIA did the deal!

If you get bored read the book on Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier, some guys live exciting, magical lives, with a lot of skill and luck. There a fair bit of American bullshit in it but he has had one amazing life.
Popeyes Lucas a NZ bomber pilot from The South Island is another amazing read.

Another unbelievable build for its time was the Concord, built in imperial and metric measurements, some in France rest in the Uk. No computer power, machined solid blocks of titanium because they couldnt weld it successfully, absolutely amazing engine design. Wish I'd flown on it, my mate in the UK did a one off across the Atlantic. Closest I've got was to look thru the one at Brooklands.

Man I'd love to see a Sikhoi go head to head with an F22 in a gun fight, no missiles. I've read that the Germans gave them (the F22's) a run for their money with their Typhoons. The US sacrificed dog fighting for tech in the 60's and it bit them in the arse in 'nam. I wonder if that will ever happen again? Or has the tech gap tipped exponentially in the favor of US pilots?
