    No damn dam

Looks like the Ruataniwha Dam got the can.

Im sure there was many plusses to the idea but as a Hawkes Bay rate payer and water user I'm not disappointed in the result.

@kiwijames I agree but john key has come out and said they are going to change the law so DOC can land swap willy nilly,
now means no nation park or protected forest in all of nz is safe

That shot at the end was great. The camera climbs to reveal what looks to me like a pine plantation.

First. John Key has been gone for months (it was Maggie Barrie)
Second. You gotta stay in Government to make the change.

So as far as 'saving' the natural environment crap goes 22ha isn't much. They do muck up the waterways though.

Was only going to be a little swimming pool. No consequence really.

That was the whole point of DOC to begin with. Take all the different crowds (that they were made up of) land, keep appropriate stuff, trade the non worthy for better. That was the very idea

Once English has made the appropriate changes to the law around land swaps the dam will continue to proceed

I dunno that that will work, a lot of people need to agree to a law change like that. There's more issues with that dam idea than just the land swap, all of the gravel in the natural watercourse goes through there so not sure what effect that will have on the natural flow of the river. Also, @berg243 - wash your mouth out...

it would be a major bill to change things.had to trench a cable for telecom alongside a road going into a park in invers 20m was into the designated park area took 6 months and conservation minister to sign off on it before we could do it and it was only grass verge.
