7mm Fatso. What's involved in case forming?

Thinking about another build and was reading Greg Duleys article on Long Range Hunting which has got me interested. Especially since Berger has launched their 195gr.

I've lost his article but from what I remember there was a bit involved in case forming? However, what sparked my interest was the comment made on the LRH article about how brass for the Fatso was easier to make because of Norma's newly released cases (.338 Norma Mag??) .

Anyway, with regards to action, short or long? I seem to recall Greg built his Fatso on a Remington 700 short action with Wyatts extended magazine. I'm guessing that to run the 195gr you'd require a long action?

Any other information would be appreciated.

His 7mm Fatmax is a 300 or 338 Norma magnum with an improved shoulder
The cases need to be neck sized to 7mm then fireformed
Needs a 338 Lapua magnum bolt face

Have a look at 28 Nosler
Less capacity but less over bore
Cases are available from Nosler and no fire forming required

The 7-300 Norma is easy as, just a straight neck down & away you go, the 28 Nosler won't be that far behind....

...... and I'd go with the Hornady 180 ELD-M (when they finally get here).

7mm Fatso involved around 7 steps to form brass from memory. It drives a 162 grn projectile around 3250 ft per sec from 26 inch barrel. 7mm Fatmax is a 7-300 Norma improved which drives a 180 grn projectile around 3225 ft per sec. Both Fatso and Fatmax can be built on Remington short actions however long range (LR) loads in above weights generally require single feed. Also the unfired LR rounds require extraction by removing the entire bolt from the rifle as they are too long to eject out the port on the short action. Unfired mag fit hunting rounds will eject in both calibes as normal. If you wanted to run the 195 Berger I would suggest the Fatmax and long action as the better option. Mag will hold 2 rounds at a squeeze in a McMillian hunters edge stock.

As suggested above, take a look at the 28 Nosler also as a comparison.

Yup, if you want a fast 7 go for the 28 Nosler with 180 ELD-M, which I am sure will be a far better LR game killer than the 195 Berger.
