200 isn't far enough to worry about it. SST's chew stuff up nasty at close range.

Not sure what all the need for a "blood trail" is, in a bush rifle for shots under 200yds, a heavy for calibre frangible bullet in the chest, staight down, no need for ninja level tracking. I like Berger VLD's at any range, and they continually "fail" by not always exiting or leaving a beautifull photo worthy mushroom on the offside, I know they "fail" because I see the destuction to the vitals when I clean up the dead animal I didn't have to track.

To the OP, any of the mid to heavy for calibre factory stuff will work inside 200yds, just don't look to shoot on the shoulder joint at close range with SST or ballistic tips, if your factory ammo shoots 2'' groups at 100 you will be fine putting in the chest of any deer out to 300 yds and almost all factory ammo will shoot better than that.

Yea thats just what came up on google. "Please dont use balistic tips on deer rah rah" but then again is a almost perfect shot when the bullet doesnt exit beacause the body takes full impact

I have always used 120grn B/Tips in my X bolt 7/08 on Reds and have not had one run away yet push them at 3000fps

balistic tip vs soft point on deer 7mm-08

I wouldn't touch a SST on deer for fear of fragmentation. Not that I'd guess they would fragment but I always prefer tough slugs.
An interlock, interbond or partition type would be my go to bullet if asked.
    Cheap, easy to find...

Having said that I am currently using Barnes (don't know why). Just cause they work. More expensive and unnecessary.

And before you visit, dig a hole in your yard and hide your $$ there, cause a visit to his little corner of the world is well bloody worth while as he has lots and lots and lots of cool shit, things can easily get out of hand financial dept. Hell I went for a some bullets for a mate and ended up having a new gun built

All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

In my 708 the Hornaday sst group two inches higher than the Remington Core Lokt so I can chop and change a little depending on what type of terrain I'm hunting in and use the SST for longer range

There is a video on you tube showing the differance between tipped and lead tip the tipped is designed for rapid expansion and a great big wound track and big tissue damage designed for trophy hunters and the lead is designed more for the meat hunter it has xrays taken by a vet showing the splinters or lead mass
