Checking a load for the Vortex Mountain Challenge

Went for a quick play this arvo and check my load for my hunting rifle as my target one is been fixed.

    I think it went well.

485 meters, 4 shots at the top right, the "lone" one in the highest point was my "cold bore".

590 meters, 5 shots, 4 hits, first shot I pull big time over the top. The shots are the ones high right side.

Few "twicks" to do such as chronograph it to confirm the velocities.

Please the photos are rotated anticlockwise so imagine it rotated 90° clockwise to the correct view.

I wouldn't bother with a chrony to get true speed Mac. Just shoot something big at a couple of ranges say 300 and 450 without dialling and measure the true drop in inches. Then calibrate your drop chart to match inch drop at said ranges and then dial and it should be sweet.

Hey @Gillie how you keeping? I hope you are well.

I have been better than i imagine but not close to the top shooters, i had some "emotional" problems that take all my excitement of me.
I am sure i can shoot better than what i did and i will prepare myself for any other occasion in the future. The event is/was just awesome, a great "bunch" o people with some serious good shooters and gear there, i think a bit different than your setup been your comp for long range "hunting" environment and here also "hunting" but in the more "precision" side of everything. Great gear and skills was "shown" here and i am VERY impressed with the organisation and set up they had.
I keep saying it but i will FOR SURE do my best to attend your event in the future, to me work(time off it) and sometimes money make it hard but i promises i will make it. I hope to see you in the south island one of these days too.

    All the best.

Yeah looked like a cool day, well set up and well run.

The long range hunting rifle can do well in this sort of competition. I had a guy in my squad shooting a sako in 280AI at a long range steel match in Auckland over the weekend. With good wind calls a good drop data he did very well. And we also had about a third of competitors not reach even half the score of the top competitors. It takes time, practice and experience to shoot well in challenging conditions. We had 6-8mps winds gusting higher and switching directions down a couple of gullies we were shooting across - made for a tricky day!
