New Guy from Wellington
Hi guys, new to rifle shooting but have been bowhunting off and on not as often as Id like for a about 6 years on a private block. Had success on a pig and a goat but not deer, have had to let a few deer wander off over the years due to the limitations of my bow. While I still enjoy it, some meat in the freezer would be good and Id like to be able to take those longer shots and have a go on public land.

There is a very healthy population of Deer throughout the Wellington region, avoid 1080 areas and you will have a very good chance, 99% of my deer hunting is public land and I have no problems getting what I need. Did you have any areas in mind to explore?

Rimutakas and the Tararuas are what Im thinking. I also have family up at Kuratau on lake Taupo but believe it is mostly Maori trust land around there and I dont have any contacts, plenty of rabbits to shoot though, Im taking my bow up there over xmas as my firearms license hasnt arrived yet.

Nothing wrong with the Tararuas and Rimutakas, both areas get hammered extremely hard by hunters but there are still good numbers around if your keen enough. Il have a brain storm as to some reasonable spots and send yah a PM.

Cheers man, thats very nice of you.

+1 had most of my success in both those places. just be prepared to walk more than an hour or two.. ( just my opinion to keep away from the goons)

Yeah, one of my concerns is how safe my vehicle will be, Im planning on buying a crappy little run about just for the purpose of taking up there. Currently I only have the work van with about 5k of tools so dont want to take that up.

depends where your going as to how safe the ride will be. empty the stuff out!?
