The start of an expensive hobbie.

Hi guys just found the forum, only been shooting for about six months consitantly doing clays and decided i might aswell get fit and see the countryside and make good use of the licence so here i am.

Did some rifle work and pest control back in scotland on the family farm and have decided to get back into the hobbie of getting out and about. Based in Christchurch but not afraid to get out there.

Any info greatly appreciated specialy on recommendations for firearms and going by some of these posts ive found already there plenty of gray hair and experiance to learn from.

Welcome aboard, plenty of gray hair and no hair experience around this place, can I make a suggestion that you edit your profile and change your location from your physical address to maybe your suburb or city etc as right now the whole world can see your address every time you post

Welcome. If you spend time browsing old threads you will find many topics covered, often more than once and some are definitely cyclical lol

One of the really useful tips I got was how to search the forum from your browser as the forum.search function really sucks.

In your browser simply type this string replacing ".222" with what you are wanting to search for

    site:nzhuntingandshooting.co.nz .222

Next tip. Some important threads disappear from time to time because their OP gets themselves banned by offending the powers that be. If a thread's content is important to you, go to "thread tools" select "print view", select "show xxx posts on one page" then use your browser functions to clip or share the web printable page that results to your favorite repository e.g. Evernote or OneNote etc. Or simply use Print function on a PC to print to file or to PDF on your computer.

    Have fun

Oh, and shooting is cheaper than golf

Mate, its been posted several times by others, but not for a while. But you're right, useful indeed. And of course you can change the site from nzhuntingandshooting.co.nz to any other website forum you want to search.

    Probably needs a sticky!

Hunting is not expensive compare to others, and you can bring back meat for all year round. It like doing photography, yes you will need certain type of camera, lens to fit your requirement and photo quality, but there are many equipment control freaks a picture can be done with 85mm lens, but they prefer 200mm with two way stabilizers motors and a tripod, and additional PS works. welcome, maybe team up someday.

I don't think hunting has to be expensive either. If you load up the safe with multiple calibres and scopes plus camping gear and then extras like thermal gear, the bill will ratchet up for sure. If you're a one guy and keep it simple, there is the initial outlay, but after that, I would hope that it's a cost neutral exercise, assuming you're not driving long distances to hunting spots. Basics for a day hunt? Rifle, scope, suppressor, ammo. A knife and pack. A PLB is highly recommended. Some would add binoculars to the list.
