Considering how good the drop from 338/ 300gr to 30/ 230gr has been (appr 10J less recoil) it makes me wonder what another 10J down to 7mm/180gr will or will not do.

My 300 generates right around 30J (minus whatever the silencer takes off, which is a lot) anda lot more managable compared to the 338.
Interesting reading as I have been looking at options lately, I am considering the 7mm Blaser Magnum for the recoil reduction.
Big ups to the Norma Magnum in this thread, an amazing caliber by the looks its found its way into second place equal with the 300BM.

First outing with the new rifle this weekend. Shot four groups prone at 100 yards, off the bipod and rear bag. It definitely shoots.

At around 8 pounds, for me it's right on the edge of the weight and useable recoil compromise.
The homemade cheek rest helps a bit.

Will update when we get an animal with it.

Finally had the opportunity to get out with the new rifle.
We went to a sweet little private spot we have where you don't have to walk far, but the animals tend to come out right on the borderline limit of shootable light.
We got to the look out early evening and sat there for about an hour. As per usual for this time of year here, it was raining... but finally as luck would have it, it eased about half an hour before dark.
About the same time two spikers came out of the scrub.
You would think building a LR gun would have been useful in this situation? Nope. They fed out of the bush 135 yards away... Very typical
I took the spiker, and it did run a very long way before it died, which was not pleasing. On closer inspection the shot was perfectly on the shoulder crease. Weird things happen, hopefully just not on a regular basis.

Here it the next day, when we finally found it.

Just a bit of an update on this 300 NM.

Its since been put into an XLR chassis as a designated farm gun.

The 225gr ELDMs that were originally being used were penciling through the shoulder and were causing animals to run a LONG way after being shot. Not much fun.

Since then we tried the 215 Berger Hybrids and had some issues with vertical, therefore tried some RL-33 and a slight jam and things are definitely looking better.

And here we are again in windy conditions, with a couple of randoms completely missing the gong.

What was made very clear is how much any wind conditions can make it very hard to single out an accuracy problem at LR, and my confidence in the load still isn't 100%. Bigger guns are definitely better. I wouldn't use the 300 NM on deer past 700 ish yards.

The best thing though is the 215's are opening up in the chest cavity. Shot this one and it walked about 10 meters, then dead.

@L.T what speed have you got the 215's doing?
These are my new favourite, im running them at 2760 out of a 22in WSM. Only shot 6 deer so far from 30m to just over 400 and all bang flops.
The first one i shot square in the shoulder and wasted alot of meat, now i go for double lung and lose bugger all meat

    Hi wsm junkie.
That is great speed in your WSM, it would be a very nice rifle to carry with the 22 inch barrel.

In the 300 NM they are doing about 3000 fps and using .358 G7, and yep they sure are opening up.

    Thanks.
