    Video - 30/223 subsonic project

    Hi

Here's a quick video of the 30/223 project rifle.

It's all working as it should - though it will get some more attention like turning down the barrel and shortening it a tad to reduce weight. Plus I'll look at making a new stock and fitting a lighter suppressor to it when time allows....But thats all ''nice to have'' stuff and wont make it shoot any better or quieter.

Anyway, the basics of my load are:

    • .223rem case necked up to .30cal
    • 240gr SMK projectile
    • Federal small rifle primer
    • 11.0 grains of AR2205 powder
    • Bullet seated about 10thou from lands
    • Velocity sits around the 1020fps mark (+/-)

The loudest noise is the impact of that ''locomotive'' of a projectile hitting the dirt! I'd say noise wise about the same as a suppressed sub-sonic .22lr or a little quieter than say a CO2 air pistol?

Similar, but without the added step of having to machine down the OAL of the parent .223 i.e. the 300whisper is usually made by shortening a standard .223 case, then necking it up to suit. The reason the Whisper is shortened is so that it can fit in an AR15 mag, whereas with my rifle (30/223) it doesn't matter about the OAL of the loaded round as I'm using it in a bolt action rifle.

This one (30/223) skips out the case shortening step and you just go ahead and size it in one go, just like you would with a normal Full length die.

Real guns start with the number 3 or bigger and make two holes, one in and one out

Cheers for the above feedback from everyone.

ARDave, ''no animals have been harmed in the making of this rifle''.... yet...

The prob with the 221 based whisper is cut down 223 brass usually wont chamber in it due to neck thickness
So many variations that are so close - hence why commonly known as the 300 WTF

Wouldn't you just turn the neck down?
Wouldn't that be better than stretching a .221 way out to 30cal?

Neck turning brass thats being shot from a autoloader? not my idea of fun
Easier just to go for a non 221 based chamber

That's sick, 30/223 is the caliber I'm looking at for a project once I get home. Have you shot any groups with it yet?

Not really, I'm a little time poor at the moment so I've only fired 10 shots through it. My first load was 10.0grains of AR2205 and it chronied about 835fps, so I bumped it up to 11.0grains and it shot about 1020fps which was good enough. I then shot a couple shots at about 25m to get it on paper, then fired a quick off hand group at 25m and all shots were within about 2'' of each other so rough enough for now.

I'll have another play with some loads next week to see what it can do.
