A person I know who is not a hunter, but was going on a hunting trip with work mates wanted to borrow a rifle for the trip.
Person works with firearms every week (NZDF) but doesnt hold a FAL.

Person said to me, that because his mates have FAL and will be carrying rifles, it will be fine that I lend one of my toys out.
However, correct me if I'm wrong, person can use a firearm with a FAL supervisor, but supervisor must not carry, and be within arms length for the "direct supervison" to be applied.


I ofcourse, did not lend out any toys, mainly because I dont lend them out unless its someone I know in my hunting group who might be range testing etc.
Secondly, because as I understand it was illegal.
Questions would have be raised about transport to the location where they were leaving from. Assuming 'person' was going to drive themself to the location, what questions would be asked by the Fuzz had 'person' got pulled over or had a traffic accident or vehicle was stolen etc.


I had texted two close hunting buddies about this, and they agreed that I had done the right thing.

You're right about the supervision and not carrying their own as well and direct supervision

You would have committed an offence in giving them the rifle (assuming given to a person without a licence)

There was a article in a magazine (i think) about someone who lent out a gun to someone (trusted by them, but didn't see their licence) and there was an accidental shooting and the lender lost his licence (and probably other things)

If I trusted him completely and I was on the same trip hunting alongside him I'd loan my 303 shitter.

Because you aren't there with him I reckon you did the right thing

I'd always err on the side of caution when firearms are involved.

Answered= not allowed-FAL holder must be in reach or locked up in approved manner.
Vehicle not approved.

Defence forces and police for Work or authorized task-usu work = can be different

You as the responsible person loses out.

It's ok to lend out your wife. Just make sure the recipient is not packing more than you. 9 times out of 10 they come back.

Ok smart arsed comment aside you definitely did the right thing never loan your firearms to anyone that can not produce a license if they are with a licensed owner he can use their rifle while they are with him. Failing that tell him to get off his lazy butt and get a FAL and buy his own gear.

the problem with lending your wife is in a couple of days they want to give her back

I had lending out things that you forget about and never get them back, and when you want them you can't remember who borrowed them in the first place.

I lend my rifle out to people with a FAL. They're a tool to me and they're hardly fragile.

I think if you lend something out then you cannot expect it back in the same condition.
A good mate or someone with high morals will look after it and return it clean and they are the ones you don't think twice about lending to
Someone who is a bit rip, shit and bust then prepare yourself for it to go either way. Generally ends in disappointment and sometimes in surprise
Then there are some people who you wish they didn't ask in the first place and life would be simpler if they hadn't

Applies to a lot of things in life including taking someone to your Spot X
