    Ammo purchase details recorded?

When buying ammo from a gunshop or sports shop, the staff check my firearm licence and I pay for the ammo. Done deal.

When buying ammo from my local farm supply store, general store or service station they check my licence AND record my name, licence number, calibre and quantity of ammo bought. In a big ledger kept under the counter.

Apparently no one else has a problem with this but I hate giving out personal information without good cause. Also, staff turnover at farmshops and servo's can be quite high and I have known the odd dodgy character to get a job at these places. Would really prefer if they did not have access to a book of local shooters' ammo details. More so now with meth sweeping through rural towns like mine and users doing burgs to fund their habits.

Consequently I try to buy ammo at gunshops whenever possible...but occasionally the farmshop has a clearance or special that is too good to pass up, or maybe I need a couple of boxes for an unexpected mission.

Long story short, why do farmshops, service stations etc. record ammo purchase details? Your thoughts please!

Showing my licence no problems . But as far as recording details of my purchases along with my details I don't think so. No idea why they would. Not a legal requirement as far as I know

The only legal requirement is for the seller to sight your license. There is no legal requirement to record ammunition sales.

Then I suggest (if you can) shop with your feet and go somewhere else, our have a word with management that your not happy with their policy and that it has no legal requirement. That unless they change then you will shop elsewhere, you are at lest then putting the ball in there court as well as trying to support a local business

Some Farmlands stores also sell reloading components I had a long "discussion" with staff one day about not needing to show a licence when buying these. Its company policy sorry was the reply. Registered a complaint with their head office pointing out that this was not required but have never heard back. The prices were eye wateringly sharp compared with other outlets.

They're well used to having to record details re the types of chemicals they supply and I suspect for consistency they've simply been told to do the same for ammo etc.

It might not be a legal requirement that they do so, but it is their right to require and record said details. It is your right to refuse, and consequently shop elsewhere.....

The local sports shop does it, they stated that the Arms Officer told them they had to record all firearm related sales. Simple for me, don't shop there.
