If you're travelling alone, you obviously can't take a firearm into a service station like BP if you needed to use the toilet. If you asked an attendant to keep a close eye on the locked vehicle and that the firearm was covered up while you're temporarily occupied, that shouldn't be a problem.
Do you not understand? It is illegal.

Do you not understand that if someone is in attendance then then it's not illegal?

    Google the adjective "unattended".

    1. not noticed or dealt with. "her behaviour went unnoticed and unattended to"

synonyms: ignored, disregarded, neglected, passed over, forgotten, forsaken, abandoned, left
    "his cries went quite unattended"

    2. not supervised or looked after."it is not acceptable for parents to leave children unattended at that age"

synonyms: unguarded, unwatched, by itself, alone, left alone, on its own, solitary, solo
    "an unattended vehicle"

It's hardly unattended if you're just paying for gas at the servo.

Would you rather have people taking guns into servos or, like that idiot from Sporting Shooters a few years ago, saying shooters would be forced to take guns into banks?

Just don't leave the car unlocked while visiting a gun shop and a few hours later, when you get to the hunting area, finding your .338 Lapua has been nicked out of it.

Or leave a MG42 machine gun in your car overnight outside a motel in a shit part of Auckland and not even knowing your car was robbed until the bank rings you about someone using your credit card.

If you've got eyes on it, and remain close enough to intervene should someone approach the vehicle, then it's not unattended.

What about if I set up a camera so I can watch my car from my phone while I'm having a dump in the servo dunnies?
