Yes, as we did (and as the law required) before the register came in.

Weirdly this website https://www.firearmssafetyauthority.govt.nz/ has all the info about what to measure and how to. Go there and have a good look around. If you can navigate this forum you can navigate the website. It even says what to do if your serial number contains things that are not western alphabet or numbers.

    Identification markings
You cannot register an arms item online if it:

    has no identification marking, or
has one that uses characters other than A-Z, 0-9, slashes and dashes.
For help, call our Registry and Services team on 0800 844 431 between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

-------------- So, if you can't register online using an * every Lee Enfield No1MkIII* or No4Mk1* or any other UK firearm using a * to denote it's a modified version from the original pattern forces you have to phone in and can't register online. I have one word for that, stats with F and ends in K and the middle two letters reference the UK (well UC but you get the idea). Jeysus Christ on a motorbike, that's circa 100,000 firearms by itself...

Ahhhh, the joy of leaving projects like this to the brains trust...

You're well overthinking it. If the online form lets you put a "*" in it then just put the "*" in it and call it a day. I'd even go so far to not even worry about the "*" at all if you can't enter it. Just call the damn thing a SMLE MKIII or Enfield No4MKI etc and done.

It's only the serial number field where this applies . . .

so...having just gone to said site and had a poke around..... the register will contain FAL holders secure storage location..which begs the question...if you store your firearms in the household of another FAL holder..for whatever reason...who needs to register it???
the owner,or the possessor and at what point(after 30days?) does a storer become a possessor ???
Im usually pretty good at working these sort of things out,but as firearms belonging to 5 people are sometimes stored in same safe...its got me puzzled.

    Based on possession.
If it moves into your safe and stays for more than the 30 days, it is to be registered to you.
If it is already in your safe, nothing needs to change until it moves to someone else's safe for more than 30 days.

Yes, after 30 days the person that is storing the firearm is the possessor and will need to register it to their name.

From what I'm reading here it sounds fairly straightforward if you're in a straightforward situation, modern firearms stored at your own house and no surplus spare parts. All the confusion starts with anything outside what "the powers that be" consider normal.

Nice of them to specify that. Still doesn't help when you have a symbol in the serial number though. That's the joy of databases - the symbols are used as functional operatives and the serial number input in the database needs to be a searchable field. Having an operative in the field means it fails as a searchable, oops.
