    Contact the dachshund clubs

They will know the breeders and their will be family pets rather than those being registered as petigree for shows

Great choice. We've got two miniature shorthairs. Yes people take the piss out of me all the time. They are great little dogs with heaps of personality and are very clever. Mine regularly chase possums and wild pigs around our place (yet to catch up with any of the latter). Equally happy crawling in front of the fire and with legs 3 inches long they don't really need any walking.

Back problems are always a potential issue and we've had two serious rounds of slipped discs in one of ours. Be careful and buy from good breeder.

We managed to source both ours in New Zealand but seriously looked at importing one from Australia - there are a lot more over there and importing them although expensive is doable. You might want to look into that.

Our big standard Black and Tan was put down this week. We are after one or two also. They are very "in" at the moment, particularly the minis.

    Brilliant Dogs.

Dachshund means "Badger Dog" in German.

If you have ever seen a pissed off Badger, then you'll know any dog that can tangle with one in a burrow is made from stern stuff.

We had one as kids "Fritz" Wonderful, but as said, bloody headstrong. I thought they had all but disappeared.

Perazzi, Daschunds are one dog where it is really worthwhile to see pups and parents before you buy. Confirmation is everything if you are to avoid expensive vet bills later on. Particularly backs and legs (front and back). The breed standard is a good guide. If you need a copy pm me your email address.
