I'm referring to deer hunting. No upland hunter in his right mind would lumber a dog with a pack.

I take plastic bag and use for waterbowl if away from creeks. I carry plenty of water if away from creeks. Dog shares my lunch. Don't take food for the dog generally
Have not done any over nighter's with the dog yet under canvas always in "proper" accommodation like shearing sheds or such.
All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

You wanna buy some dogs with a bit of staying power kawhia? Might have a spare or two about.

The realdog packs ride forward, I'll see what photos Rose has of them but if you want quality you buy off them. That goes for leads, harnesses etc as well as it's all made by them in ranfurly,.

Brother that sure stirred the pot up a bit didn't it!!!!
As far as I'm concerned the bloody dog can carry it's own F'n dog biscuits if I'm going in for more than a couple of days. AND: she can put a couple of Wakatoo's in the side pocket for the dog biscuit buyer.

Didn't realise that venison hunters sniped at gamebird hunters as well as venison????? Unless: that was all meant in the nicest possible way????

Some of us do both eh????

I got a dog to help me hunt and to be a good companion. And she is good at both. The least I can do is carry a bit of water and food for her.

I don't want my dog wearing out any sooner than she needs too, either.
As for a dog carrying cans of beer, well to my mind that's pretty damned mean spirited. Carry your own beer, or better still leave it at home and cart a bit more water for your canine friend.

I admire the Duley's greatly but there are 2 things they do that I don't like much; loading their dogs up and leaving shot deer overnight where they fall before butchering them.

Used the pack on the weekend.Bush country and saw five hinds with fawns and a pig. Sky didn't fall down. Dog didn't die. I didn't lift 400 x 25kg (Thanks Tussock for working that out) and it seems to work just fine despite the internets best efforts

I just spent four days in the Kaimanawas. Wolf carried in his dog food for those four days. Worked out to be about 1.5kgs I think. I can see no reason for the dog not to carry it's food. It's certainly not hurting him at that weight. And also adds another training element. Anything that causes the dog to use it's brain seems like a good idea to me. Training the dog not to eat what's on it's shoulders. I expect some labs would have an enormous mental battle with that
