    Hi guys. I'm a volley in Lincoln Canterbury. Reasonably busy station with 300 odd calls annually. Doing QFF in august and am currently doing drivers. Can't wait for first drive under lights. This is my fourth year in nzfs and served two before that with rural fire force. Been a part of 3 different from nzfs brigades too. Love it and wouldn't be without it. Good luck with combat. Gave it a go once. 4Min, dropped the dummy 3 times but still finished. Didn't help o was racing against Steven Maw. Drivers challenge sounds fun though.

    Thanks Sako. That's the plan. Great team here and receiving some exceptional training. Just need other road users to play ball. Remarkable how many drivers can't see or hear a big red screaming 14 ton truck up behind them.

    The exhaust goes straight onto where the crew get changed and they are sick of it.
    A few years back we had a large fan fitted to the roof above. About as much use as shooting deer or ducks with blanks.
    Annual Spring Clean visit by Region and Area was due so I thought I would try and get the message across.
    Their response was to wait till everyone changed and out of the station before starting up. One suggestion was to fill with pink batts and drill vent holes on the side opposite the exhaust.

    i know at our stations we have the long hose that clips on , and the extractor fan kicks in when the bay doors open .... you boys need to push for a better system ..... what vollie station are you at ?

    We have an extractor pipe/fan system. A bag inflates to hold it onto the exhaust and an air switch releases the air so it releases off as you drive out

    If i could have a full time job shooting pests i'm up for over time.

    That is what we were pushing for. even under complaint of health and safety the property team says fat chance. The Region safety and wellbeen manager was the one who said for everyone to vacate when starting up
    @BRADS The container was left on for 2km going to a call the other week before been noticed

    @sako75 thats a 10+ from me.
    In all seriousness though its a bit of a shit situation. When I was a vollie in Wainui we made up boxes with Kitchen extractor fan(tinfoilish type) pipe that went to the roof. All done by members, 400 ish calls per year.
    Up until recently even at our (paid) station back row tracks, 3rd and 4th runners had a plywood box about 300 deep filled with Pink Batts as exhaust protection. Only took 4 years of H&S lobbying to get it put right.

    Don't start the engines till the coms are done, crew gear up whilst coms are coming thru. Doors get opened, engines get started and away we go. Interesting training last nite, picked up a few small points for the crew to work with. One of the crew had turned the motor off on our first response vehicle to save fuel, but with all the lights running it didn't take long before it was flat, Using a delivery hose as a suction hose, oh well might as well do a tandem pump exercise, and one of the suction lines had sand jamming the valve so it wouldn't work, one of the Wayjax pumps decided to play up. Luckily the operator is a mechanic and could fix on the spot. Guess that's why we practice. A good nite and a good turnout.
