Thinking about the salt bath, there could be an issue with the heat transfer from the salt to the brass lowering the over all temp in the direct vicinity, it would take time for the salt to regain...

Yeah true but being that as it is its a well detailed experiment that others can repeat and check results. Im inclined to believe it.
