I go down to a 10lb fluro leader on softbait setup. Unless you are fishing a snaggy reef or similar, it is fine. Bite rate increases quite dramatically.

If it were me, I think I would try Pink baits drifted through usual Gurnard spots.
Make sure the bait is hitting bottom before retrieve

I have yet to see softbaits work effectively while at anchor Cam.
Accurate are bloody good reels, but also rather expensive
