You wont need 4wd to get to Ruahine hut, however you may need it to get to No Mans and will definitely need it to reach the White Hut as the road is very rutted just past No Mans and 300m...

Haven't seen any Mountain Bikes or tracks in there yet so they can't have too much clout.
