I think your wrong re the deer at 500m on 9 power, I recently shot a stag at 600y on 10 power (3-10 nightforce shv) with no problems what so ever, the deer wasn't that small, certinally not small...

On my 300wsm I run a nightforce 3-10, don't need anymore magnifaction, have had it on animals at 700 and wouldn't be afraid to take the shot, longest I have used it to is 600y and no problems.........
