The New Balance (model 809) off-road running shoe has really helped me in the steep shale/rock country. Better grip than any boot I have ever used and seriously comfortable, also sore or tired feet...
Yes, the top lifts up via compression straps and easily gives you another 10 litres
Noisy in the tight stuff but at 6 foot 2 so am I, so I don't hunt in there, shoot them in the open :)

Here it is with all the protein from a Sika hind and 2 yr old in it
Still fitted all my other gear and the top is not even extended for the extra 10 litre capacity
