Depends on rifle... As a rule of thumb rimfire every 1000 rounds, centrefire every 50. Guess it's he same as cleaning the rifle, some need cleaning often in order to cycle, some wih do 1000+ rounds...

I take mine apart and scrub in the sink with a bit of detergent when the missus is away.... Then stick beside the fire for a few days to dry. Only do it every brick or so. Those little pipe cleaners...
